Book publishing professionals Sonja Hakala of
West Hartford, Vermont and Linda Roghaar of Amherst, Massachusetts
have teamed up to create a publishing company designed to publish
books by experienced authors. Their new venture, White River Press,
is issuing new editions of out-of-print titles as well as new works
by authors ready to take advantage of the changing world of book
publishing.
“In the past ten years, changes in printing
technology have made seismic changes in book publishing,” Roghaar
explains. “And we’re here to help authors take advantage of these
innovations and alternatives.”
Changes in the industry have left thousands of
successful authors without a publisher for a wide variety of
reasons. It’s a situation that frustrates everyone, Hakala says.
Between them, Hakala and Roghaar have experience
in every facet of book publishing. Hakala has been a freelance
writer and editor in newspapers, magazines, and books (American
Patchwork and Teach Yourself Visually Quilting) for over 20 years. In addition, she’s a book designer with a
great deal of experience in marketing. Roghaar, a literary agent, is
also an editor (KnitLit, KnitLit (too), and KnitLit the Third) as well as
a longtime book sales professional. Hakala has helped several
authors bring their works into print over the years, using her
editorial and design skills. For her side, Roghaar knew a number of
authors who needed help keeping their work in print.
“We were both so frustrated by some of the changes we saw
happening in publishing,” Roghaar said. "We created White River Press to publish quality books with active and innovative authors."
“Between the two of us, we knew how to take a
book from manuscript to sales, and most authors don’t have that
breadth of experience,” Hakala added. “At White River Press, experienced authors have a home."
In 2007, White River Press issued new editions
of four books: Refrigerator Rights by Dr. Will Miller and Dr. Glenn
Sparks; The World Invisible by Shulamith Oppenheim; The Cocktail
Cart by Edward Bear; Feeding the Body, Nourishing the Soul by
Deborah Kesten. Upcoming titles include Deadly Election by Betsy
Hartmann, Reflections by Felix Oppenheim, and The Seven Deadly Needs by Edward Bear.
White River Press is also opening up the world
of audiobooks to authors. Their first audio title, Lost Fathers by
Laraine Herring, will be available on Audible.com soon.
